A picture is worth a thousand words as they say, so I thought the most informative way to compile a listing of Legnano serial numbers was where and when I could acquire an image of the bike and its serial number.

In some cases the listings and their images have come to me from readers and in other cases I have downloaded eBay listings in various countries as well as miscellaneous internet postings of Legnano bicycles of all types and condition.

Why the photos, don’t you trust people? I do trust people, especially cyclists, however the photos diffuse the issue for everyone and it’s only one more click of the camera to capture the serial number.  More importantly,the production date is one piece of useful information whereas a photo also speaks to the bike’s current condition and how it is configured today.

As there is no formal ‘production log’ from the Legnano factory in existence that I am aware of, it begs the question as to how I came to arrive at dates for each of the serial numbers. The answer to that question comes out of the totality of my research that is summarized in the post, What year and model is this Legnano?.

In almost all cases I have decided to bracket the production date by two years (ie. 1960-61) as there are too many factors involved to pin the date to a specific year. Where the production year is very certain, an asterisk follows the date (ie. 1946*). Another exception are the Legnano team bikes that carried a different serial number format that included that actual year of production. Serial numbers for the team bikes follow the listing for the commercial production.

I have also put the serial numbers in bold type (ie. BO5289) for those bikes that I believe are original or essentially unaltered (excepting a part or two) from their original factory production. It is impossible to be absolutely certain of a bike’s originality as a wheel or pedal could have been replaced as little as a week or two after the bike was first purchased. That said, my aim here is not to legitimize any bike’s originality but rather to provide an accurate reference (to the best of my knowledge) for those enthusiasts that are working on a period correct restoration.  Uncertainties are noted in the comments at the bottom of the photo images where time has permitted.

There are also some bikes on this list that are in museums and in personal collections, including my own, where the history is very clear. The serial numbers of these Legnanos have been used as ‘benchmarks’ for the listing of production dates.  In fairness, all of the production dates could be disputed plus or minus a year (team bikes excepted) and this is another reason why I wanted to include the photos of the bikes should anyone want to consider the dating for themselves.

Even in the case of an original owner with the original bill of sale, the date of sale may not be the actual production date as bikes often laid over from one year to the next, possibly even a few years in those days, until the distributor or shop had a buyer.

In the interests of personal privacy and the expressed request of some owners, I have not included the names of the people that own these bikes and actually I do not see any real value in publishing this information anyway.
